In fact, group treatment meth ods have been so widely adopted that today in many psychiatric settings there is no other alternative available to most persons who come for help: It is either into the group or out the clinic door. Group treat ment is not a new concept in social work; since the 1930's, social group work has been considered one of the profession's primary treatment methods. Yet, paradoxically, the social worker in a psychiatric clinic is more likely to be using a group psychotherapy model of treatment than a social group work model. As Frey and Kolodny have observed:
