Abstract

The homestay industry in Malaysia emphasizes rural enterprises, cultural exchanges, acceleration of rural and urban integration, and the involvement of women in the tourism sector aimed at reducing rural poverty, encouraging Bumiputra (indigenous people,) ownership of businesses/enterprises and leveraging on women’s talents. The Homestay Program is viewed as rural and cultural CBT run mostly by women. This paper aims at investigating the nature and roles of social capital and competence in developing human capital among women participating in the homestay program in Malaysia. It also explores how three factors raise women’s social capital and human capital in CBT’s economic development.
