  • Sadia Farrukh

Background: Human biology, even inside the womb, is not safe from the environment and can leave parental epigenetic marks on the newborn. However, multiple risk factors that influence the telomere biology of the fetus are not fully known. This study aimed to determine the influence of parents' socioeconomic status (SES) and its related biomedical manifestations on newborn telomere length. Methods: A total of 204 parent-newborn pairs were recruited in this study. Blood samples were obtained after informed consent, and demographic and environmental risk factors such as socioeconomic status, education and exposure to endemic disease were recorded. The Leukocyte Telomere Length (TL) quantification was done using qPCR and T/S ratio was calculated. For the association between paternal and newborn TL and different variables, multivariate regression analysis was utilized. The results with p<0.05 were considered Statistically significant. Results: The mean age (years) of mothers and fathers was 27+5.12, 34+6.36. Parents with an increase in age have a positive association with newborns TL (T/S ratio) (2.31 + 1.45) (p=0.034) (mother: β 0.032, p=.009, father: β=0.043, p=0.099). The low SES and blue color occupational group showed significantly smaller TL in parents-newborns (1.5 + 1.14, 1.41 + 1.08, 1.95 + 1.36) (p<0.05). Moreover, parents with environmentally imposed non-communicable diseases like GDM/Diabetes/hypertension had shorter LTL (1.54 + 1.37, 1.32+1.1) than their newborns (2.36 + 1.43) (p=0.048) (Hypertension: β = -0.785, p = 0.045, COVID: β = -0.791, p=0.069). Most diseases were seen in the high SES (94.1%, 60.8%) followed by the upper middle, low middle and low SES, respectively. Conclusion: The parents' socioeconomic status and its related biomedical manifestations can reprogram the telomere biology of the newborn.

This study aims to describe and analyze the extent to which the influence of the socio-economic status of parents on the learning outcomes of class students. The research method uses quantitative research with a descriptive correlative approach implemented at Madrasah Aliyah Persiapan Negeri 4 Medan. The population in this study were all students of class XI with a sample of 168 students. The data analysis technique in this study used a prerequisite test consisting of a normality test, a homogeneity test, a linearity test, and a multicollinearity test. Then continued with a hypothesis test consisting of a partial test (t test), a simultaneous test (F), multiple linear regression analysis, a determination coefficient test (R2) and a correlation coefficient test. The results showed that in the education level coefficient, the Tcount value <Ttable is 0.804 <1.97462, so H0 is accepted and Ha is rejected. This means that there is no influence of the level of parental education on student learning outcomes. In the income level coefficient, the Tcount value> Ttable is 2.348 <1.97462, so Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. This means that there is an influence of parental income level on student learning outcomes. While in the work coefficient, the Tcount value <Ttable is -1.616 <1.97462, so Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. This means that there is no influence of parental work on student learning outcomes. Then the probability value of significance (sig) <0.05 is obtained, namely 0.044 <0.05 and the Fcount value> Ftable is 2.762> 2.66, so Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. So it is obtained that there is an influence of parental socio-economic status on learning outcomes which can be shown from the value of the determinant coefficient (R square) of 0.048, meaning that the influence of the socio-economic status variable on learning outcomes is 0.048 or 4.8%. While the correlation value (R) is 0.220 or 22% which indicates a low level of relationship. From the above understanding, it can be concluded that there is an influence of parental socio-economic status on student learning outcomes (Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected).

Sports participation of children and adolescents in Germany: disentangling the influence of parental socioeconomic status
  • Jul 23, 2021
  • BMC Public Health
  • Lea Rittsteiger + 5 more

BackgroundParticipation in sports and physical activity (PA) is a critical resource for children’s health and social development. This study analyzes how the parental socioeconomic status (SES) of children and adolescents affects their PA in sports clubs (organized sports) and outside of sports clubs (unorganized sports) and tests whether the potential impact of parental SES is mediated by the opportunity structure of their residential area (walkability, infrastructure, etc.) and by family and peer support for PA. Furthermore, PA is analyzed respecting differences by gender and migration background.MethodsUsing representative data from the MoMo/KiGGS study (2009–2012 and 2014–2017), we take into account about 8000 measurements from about 7000 subjects. We estimate hurdle regression models to analyze the minutes per week spent on sports activities.ResultsResults show that children with a higher parental SES, children living in areas with many opportunities for PA, and children receiving family and peer support are more physically active than children without these features. Controlled for opportunities and support, status effects are small but visible. The differences regarding parental SES are much more apparent for organized sports than for unorganized sports, indicating the relevance of economic resources. Boys are more active than girls, whereas there is no clear effect of migration background.ConclusionsThe coefficient of parental SES on organized sports most probably relates to the resources needed to participate in sports clubs, including fees and equipment. Lower membership fees might potentially help to integrate children with low parental SES into sports clubs and thereby make organized sports more accessible to all social classes.

The Influence of Parental Involvement and Socioeconomic Status on Academic Achievement among Special Science Class Students
  • Jan 1, 2024
  • International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science
  • Decereh R Francisco + 12 more

This research aimed to investigate the impact of parental involvement and socioeconomic status on the academic achievement of Special Science Class students at Lorenzo S. Sarmiento Sr. National High School. Employing a quantitative approach with 167 respondents, mean scores, Pearson’s r, and regression analysis were utilized for data analysis. Along with this, the findings revealed a very high level of responsibilities and attendance, and a high degree of parental involvement, particularly in volunteer and mentoring activities, and communication and support. However, literacy and tutorial assistance, along with leadership and partnership, demonstrated moderate levels. Furthermore, socioeconomic status exhibited high levels, with family background, peer influence, interest, and health serving as significant indicators. The results also showed a very high level of student-related factors influencing academic achievement, followed by a high level of degree predominantly influenced by teacher-related factors, home-related factors, and school-related factors. The study established a significant positive correlation between parental involvement and academic achievement (Pearson’s r = 0.565, p<0.001), as well as between socioeconomic status and academic achievement (Pearson’s r = 0.750, p<0.001). This led to the rejection of the null hypothesis, signifying a substantial relationship between parental involvement, socioeconomic status, and academic achievement among Special Science Class students. Regression analysis identified responsibilities and attendance, literacy and tutorial assistance, and volunteer and mentoring activities as influential domains of parental involvement on academic achievement. Moreover, interest and peer influence emerged as significant predictors of academic achievement within the socioeconomic status domains. These findings underscore the critical roles of parental involvement and socioeconomic factors in shaping academic success among Special Science Class students, offering valuable insights for educators and stakeholders.

  • Nov 2, 2024
  • Jurnal Pendidikan dan Pembelajaran Indonesia (JPPI)
  • Imaniar Lintang Ayuninggar + 3 more

This research investigates how family-based financial management education and parents' socioeconomic status impact financial literacy among grade XI students at MAN 2 Malang - Turen. Additionally, it explores the role of financial well-being as a mediating variable in the relationship between family financial education, parental socioeconomic status, and students' financial literacy. The study employs a quantitative approach, utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) based on Partial Least Square (PLS) for data analysis. A total of 110 grade XI students from MAN 2 Malang - Turen participated in this research. The findings indicate that family financial education significantly influences students' financial literacy. Conversely, while parents' socioeconomic status has a positive impact on financial literacy through financial well-being, this effect is not statistically significant. This outcome is attributed to economic disparities among students' families, challenging job conditions, and limited resources, which often prompt parents to migrate for improved opportunities. This study underscores the vital role of family financial education in fostering students' financial literacy, advancing parental socioeconomic status, and enhancing students' financial well-being.

  • Habeeb Omoponle Adewuyi

Teenage pregnancy has been identified as a social issue that requires attention. Given the negative impact on teenage mothers, the people who care for them, and the children they give birth to. This study examined the pattern of relationship between body image, self-esteem, socio-economic status, peer influence, and teenage pregnancy. This study employed a correlational design, and a multistage sampling procedure was utilized. Adolescents in Ibadan constitutes the population (N = 150; 12.0% below 14 years, 58.7% 14 – 16 years, while 29.3% were 17 – 19 years). Participants completed standardized instruments: (Body Image Acceptance Survey α = 0.85; Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale α = 0.78; Socio-economic Status Scale α = 0.79; Peer Influence Scale α = 0.81; and Teenage Pregnancy Scale α = 0.87). The results showed that body image (r = 0.327; p<0.05), self-esteem (r = 0.376; p<0.05), socio-economic status (r = 0.306; p<0.05), and peer influence (r = 0.201, p<0.05) all had a significant relationship with teenage pregnancy. A multiple regression coefficient (R = 0.484) and multiple regression adjusted (R2 = 0.234) were obtained. Also, self-esteem recorded the most effective relative contribution to teenage pregnancy, followed by body image, parental socio-economic status, and peer influence, respectively. This emphasizes the necessity of broad and all-encompassing strategies to stop teenage pregnancy because it is unlikely that a single element will be adequate to deal with the problem successfully.
