Snow trade and access to cold temperatures in Lima between the wars of independence and the establishment of free trade (1820-1850)
Context/Objective: This article examines the population of Lima’s access to locally extracted natural cold temperatures (snow) during the first half of the 19th century. Then, colonial structures that facilitated its production were dismantled and replaced by ice imports from abroad, resulting from changes in transportation and the emergence of a global cold market, of which the Pacific coast was a part. Methodology: The essay employs a qualitative approach, drawing on social and economic perspectives, to identify the actors involved in natural cooling processes. It also examines an environmental history perspective to study the tension between the environment and these actors, both human and non-human. Originality: The history of the snow and ice trade (and, by extension, the history of producing cold temperatures) has been widely studied in the Global North but not in the South. This text provides initial approaches to connecting these regions and products. Conclusions: In Peru, the political transition from the Ancien Régime to the new republican order determined access to new sources of cold temperatures and destabilized local sources of supply.

Rice husk is a major waste of paddy rice cultivation, produced in very high quantities, with no specific applications in the past. However, considering physical and chemical properties of this material, the use of rice husk could be of major economic and environmental significance depending on possible utilization options. Therefore, finding sustainable ways of using rice husk is essential for a large rice producing country like Iran. The main aim of the present study was to identify the most suitable options for using rice husk to accomplish the goals of sustainable rice production and valorization in Guilan Province, Iran. To this end, we employed the analytic hierarchy process and the opinions of experts for exploring the most important potential applications of rice husk for industrial purposes, for energy generation, use as animal feed, for soil improvement, for mulching, and disposal by burning from economic, environmental, and social perspective. Among the studied indices, the economic criteria had the highest importance score (0.498) in determining the best applications of rice husk, followed by environmental and social indices (0.276 and 0.225, respectively). From the economic perspective, the use of rice husk waste for industrial purposes (0.349) was assessed to be more economical than use in other sectors. From the environmental perspective, rice husk was preferred to be used for soil improvement. Finally, from the social perspective, the use of rice husk for industrial use (0.315) was also assessed to be more socially compatible than its other uses. Overall, the application of rice husk in industry was prioritized by respondents with weight 0.299, with next priority its use for energy generation or processing with weight 0.188, showing a slight superiority over its application for soil amendment. The findings not only aid in selecting the best alternative for husk exploitation but also help decision makers to understand why an alternative is preferred over the other options.

Objectives This study analyzes the 2022 revised National Curriculum Framework (draft) and its alignment with Education for Sustainable Development(ESD) to derive implications for textbook development. Methods The research examines the subject-specific objectives, content systems, and achievement standards in terms of their relevance to the core content and elements of ESD. The study's objective is implemented by analyzing the content of the National Curriculum Framework(draft), subject-specific objectives, content systems, and achievement standards for each subject, while selecting relevant elements of ESD based on previous research. Results Firstly, the National Curriculum Framework(draft) is evaluated in relation to the concept of sustainable development, encompassing social, environmental, and economic perspectives of ESD. The analysis reveals that seven out of the nine social perspectives are reflected, while only four out of the nine environmental perspectives and one out of the four economic perspectives are included. This highlights the need for a more balanced approach across all perspectives. Secondly, all subjects except mathematics incorporate elements of ESD in their subject-specific objectives for fifth and sixth grades. However, apart from some environmental perspectives found in ethics, society, and practical arts, the objectives predominantly align with the social perspective. Achievement standards demonstrate a higher inclusion of core contents and content elements of sustainable development education compared to objectives and content systems. Lastly, textbook development based on the 2022 revised curriculum should ensure equal representation of all three perspectives of ESD, with diverse content elements included within each perspective. It is crucial to incorporate ESD into all subjects. Conclusions The study emphasizes the growing demand for ESD to prepare for future societies. The findings serve as fundamental guidelines for the application of ESD in textbook development and contribute to the creation of desirable textbooks.

Through the distribution of sacrificial meat to the poor and those in need, qurban encourages a more equitable distribution of wealth in society. This helps reduce social inequality and create economic justice. In addition, qurban also provides economic opportunities for sacrificial animal breeders and traders, which can increase their income. The legal basis for the economic implications of qurbani can be found in the hadith that encourages helping the poor and poor. From a social perspective, qurban has the values of solidarity and brotherhood. Through the distribution of sacrificial meat, qurbani strengthens social bonds between Muslims, creates a sense of unity, and reduces social disparities. Qurbani also helps build an individual's social psyche, fostering empathy, care, and social awareness. The legal basis for the social values of qurbani can be found in the Quran, which emphasizes the importance of helping others. This study shows that qurbani worship has a wide range of benefits from a worship, economic, and social perspective. Understanding and implementing these qurbani values can make a positive contribution in strengthening spiritual life, building economic justice, and encouraging social solidarity in Muslim society.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of sustainability management (SM) at coffee houses on customers’ store image and behavioral intention. In addition, customers’ willingness to pay a premium for sustainable coffee houses was studied. During October 2011, a web survey was conducted via an on-line research company with customers aged 20 to 39 visiting one of the top five coffee houses in Korea at least once a month. A total of 300 targeted customers responded and all the data were analyzed. An exploratory factor analysis derived two dimensions of SM: SM in Social and Environmental Perspective and SM in Economic Perspective. The result of structural equation modeling indicated that SM in Economic Perspective at coffee houses had a significant positive effect on customers’ behavioral intention with mediating effect by store image, but SM in Social and Environmental Perspective did not have such effect. Approximately one-third (31%) of the respondents were willing to pay a premium for a sustainable coffee house in a scenario. approximately 84% of the respondents unwilling to pay a premium for the sustainable coffee house chose the cost-related reasons including “Coffee price at the coffee house that they most often visit is already expensive (62.3%)” for such unwillingness. The results of this study showed that SM of coffee houses, especially that in Economic Perspective, could contribute to store image, and therefore increase customers’ favorable behavioral intention, although the additional cost resulted from such SM practices might not be easily accommodated by customers.
