Abstract
Low back pain originating from lumbar facet joints or zygapophyseal joints has been identified as a potential cause of low back pain. Facet osteoarthritis, a degenerative pathology, is the most common cause of facet pain, and its prevalence increases with age. Facet syndrome is a frequent diagnosis in rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics athletes, surfing, bodyboarding, and yoga, due to its characteristic repetitive and / or maintained movements of hyperextension and rotation of the lumbar spine. The facet syndrome does not yet reach consensus from its diagnosis to the therapeutic strategies adopted, being still poorly understood, and probably underdiagnosed, which implies the need for further investigation.
