Abstract

Rates of smoking in the US have declined consistently and reached a low 2018. Nevertheless, maternal smoking during pregnancy (SDP) remains among the leading causes of poor infant health outcomes including preterm birth (PTB) and low weight birth (LWB). Although SDP is a vital statistic whose collection is federally mandated, its collection is conducted by self-report which may introduce significant reporting bias leading to an underestimate in rates of SDP.
