Abstract

Many innovations have been proposed for new game interfaces, mostly focused in gesture and body movement interpretation and motion based sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. However, the paradigm of the traditional gamepad has proved to be irreplaceable, with most console games still relying on it. This work proposes a dynamic and customizable game controller, based on a smartphone app. The game designer may project specific controllers for individual games and the controller can change over the game flow in order to adapt to the content. This solution includes an API that allows the game to gather and record input data. Based on this data, the system can dynamically and smoothly rearrange its layout, creating a unique and customized user experience. We validated our proposal based on its appliance to a game developed by us. We realized two test sessions, one with different groups of users and other with different game controllers. The first session had two groups of users: casual and expert players, where different aspects of the interaction were analyzed. The second session compared the Smart Controller with and without adaptations. Furthermore, statistical differences were found, showing a promising response to this new way to play.
