Abstract

New applications of pumpable ice suspensions are based on their favourable heat transfer properties, and in particular on high effective heat transfer coefficients and heat capacities compared with equivalent single phase fluids. The paper reviews recent innovative uses of ice slurries, which have been predominantly in the area of rapid and effective food chilling and freezing. The opportunity to absorb large quantities of heat at constant low temperatures has lead to the use of ice slurries in gas cooling, fire fighting, medicine, specialised heat transfer equipment and thermal storage.
