Abstract

The slow philosophy shouldn't be interpreted as a temporary phenomenon, but rather as a life philosophy and a worldwide social movement. With respect to tourism, touristic practices are increasingly influenced by a new sense of environmental responsibility and in the quality of touristic experiences. This chapter highlights how sustainability; territory; well-being; and quality of life, experience and consumption are essential aspects in understanding slow tourism. The work describes the relationship between these aspects and slow tourism through the definition of three paradigms, offering a framework for future research on the subject and highlighting the importance of slowness and responsibility as necessary elements in the experience of slow tourism. The three paradigms that will be analyzed in the chapter are (a) experience – slow tourism and consumption; (b) sustainability – slow tourism and territory; and (c) well-being – slow tourism and quality of life. The implications for each are laid out. Viviana Calzati: 0000-0002-2894-2177 Paola de Salvo: 0000-0001-8427-6757
