Abstract

Sleep dysfunction is not a normal part of aging and impairs the quality of life, function and health of the older adult. Common sleep disorders affecting the older adult are insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome. The multidisciplinary treatment of sleep complaints in the older adult, includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological/behavioral interventions. In addition, the geriatric specialist is in a unique opportunity to offer guidance on the use of consumer sleep technologies. Engaging the older adult in shared decision making may help improve outcomes in the treatment of sleep complaints.
