Abstract

The UK is likely to be facing a scientific manpower crisis by the end of the decade. Demand for scientists and engineers is expected to rise by over 25% and, despite government plans to increase the number of 18–19 year olds going into higher education (currently 15%) to 23% by the year 2000, the falling popularity of science and engineering courses is already causing concern. The UK Council of Science and Technology Institutes (CSTI) held a meeting in February to look at the problem.
