Abstract

Adhesive-bonded lap joints with a rectangular bonded area are widely used in the four corners of square boxes made of wood or aluminun. A beam with a rectangular cross-section is affected by a bending moment load, and the adhesive-bonded lap joint with the rectangular bonded area is affected by a twisting moment load. For adhesive-bonded circular and rectangular joints loaded under torsion, this paper presents formulae to predict the nominal ultimate shear stresses of the joints needed to produce failure when the dimensions of the adherends and the mechanical properties of the adhesive are known.
