Abstract

Thomas Browne’s encyclopedic Pseudodoxia epidemica, commonly known as “Vulgar Errors,” addressed what he considered widespread misconceptions about a variety of subjects as well as offering new knowledge about the same. His discussion of blackness testifies to the popularity of theories of the curse of Ham as well as climate in understanding blackness. Widely cited by medical men and philosophers, Dutch, German, French, and Italian editions appeared through the eighteenth century.
