Abstract

We study a model of an amorphous magnet in which the disorder is described by a randomly varying easy magnetization axis. We assume that the system has a net anisotropy, not withstanding the randomness. With a magnetic field applied perpendicular to this axis, we show that the system behaves as a spin glass, i.e., there is no long-range magnetic order when the field is close to the anisotropy field. It is this effect which may ultimately limit the response of transversely field-annealed ribbons.
