Abstract
Strips of metal-like and insulator-like behavior, the so-called compressible and incompressible strips, are expected to develop with magnetic field within the depletion region at the edge of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES). Here, we summarize our recent experimental results in mapping out these strips by using a metallic single-electron transistor close to a gate electrode which redefines the edge of the 2DES by electrostatic depletion.
