Abstract

In GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), the mobile station receives signals from the base station. The mobile station is either at the cell level or the routing area (RA) level. During the packet transmission the MS is tracked at the cell level and when there is no packet transmission, it is tracked at the routing area level. A READY TIMER (RT) mechanism was proposed in [5] to determine when to switch from cell tracking to RA tracking. The ready timer in both the MS and the SGSN may lose synchronization. To overcome this problem we are implementing the ready counter (RC). Here we take into consideration the no of cell crossings. If there are no packet transmissions after the MS has made K cell crossings, then the MS is tracked at the routing area level [5]. We will also implement DRC (Dynamic Ready Counter) Algorithm in [5] which optimizes the K value to reduce the total cost. During this process we take into consideration the location update and paging cost, which we calculate for different parameters
