Abstract

As of the year 2008 the European automobile manufacturers have agreed to reduce the CO2-emissions of their vehicle fleets to 140 g/km. Measures for lightweight design and thus fuel consumption reductions shall support this aim. In addition it is possible to compensate the trend of vehicle weight progression due to the increasing comfort and safety features. The present article deals with the analysis of the relationship between vehicle mass reduction and the corresponding fuel consumption. This simulation study was conducted by the Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen mbH Aachen (fka).
