Abstract

Child occupants are considered very vulnerable in the case of vehicle accidents due to the fact that their bodies are not fully developed and thus they have a higher risk of injury. Because of this, child seats have been developed to be mounted on the backseat of the vehicle and have 2 seating positions, facing the rear of the vehicle or facing the front of it. This paper aims to analyse the two seating positions of a child seat and to determine the injury risk of a child occupant using a virtual simulation of a vehicle crash at different velocities and a multibody model for the occupant. The results of the simulation show that a rear-facing child seat has better occupant protection and overall could reduce the injury probability in case of frontal vehicle collisions.
