Abstract

The story of Clever Hans has been used in psychology classes to illustrate various concepts in experimental design. This article describes how to replicate the Clever Hans effect by training a rat to bar press in response to a 22,000-Hz signal surreptitiously controlled by the instructor. The demonstration elicits student interest in experimental design and stimulates critical thinking.
