Abstract

A simple design for laminates is described, based on the assumptions that only axially aligned plies can sustain any load and that all applied shears can be carried as tension and compression forces at 45° to the shear axes. Classical fully-elastic design is outlined and compared with the principle of simple design. An easily applied approximation for fully-elastic design is also demonstrated. The principles and applications of this simple method are discussed. It is recommended for general use because it is conservative and easily understood and therefore more likely to be correctly applied.
