Abstract

Some relaxation situations are analysed, where exact solutions are available, viz pure bending of beams and pressure loading in thick-walled spherical shells. Approximate solutions are derived according to various assumptions, and are compared to the exact ones. It is concluded that the concept of reference stress, derived for forward creep situations, may be used to advantage in solving relaxation problems, especially for structures which are highly kinematically determinate.
