Abstract The effect of a few ionic liquids on the synthesis of silica aerogels was studied. An interesting catalytic role played by this new class of solvents was unravelled: it is proposed that these ionic liquids interfered in the gelation process by accelerating the hydrolysis and condensation rates of silica monomers.
