Abstract

Summary A study of the management of 99 patients with acute viral hepatitis is described. The intention of the study was to discover whether rest in bed during the acute phase of the illness influenced the duration of convalescence or the incidence of relapse during convalescence. Following admission to hospital and a period of rest in bed, the patients were discharged at different stages of their illness according to their liver function tests at discharge and followed up as outpatients until fully recovered. A statistically significant relationship was found between the incidence of relapse and the level of aspartate transaminase at discharge, although no relationship was shown between the duration of total hospital care (inpatient and outpatient care combined) and liver function at discharge. These results are at variance with those obtained from previous similar studies.
