Abstract

We have investigated magneto-transport in pristine and irradiated samples of an antiferromagnetically coupled Co(1.1nm)/[Co(1.1 nm)/Cu(0.9 nm)]×50 multilayer. The multilayer was grown on a Si substrate in a molecular beam epitaxy system under ultrahigh vacuum. The multilayer samples have been irradiated with 1 MeV Si+ ions in the fluence range 1×1014 – 1×1017 ions/cm2 under high vacuum at room temperature. We observed a sign reversal of magneto-resistance (MR) at high fluence and a second sign reversal at the highest fluence of our study. At 2K MR is negative for the pristine sample and remains negative for the sample irradiated at the lowest fluence. MR switches from negative to positive at a fluence of 5×1014 ions/cm2 and remains positive up to the irradiation fluence of 5×1016 ions/cm2. Further sign reversal of MR from positive to negative occurs at the fluence of 1×1017 ions/cm2.
