Abstract

A quantum field theory of inelastic electron diffraction is proposed and utilized to calculate the differential inelastic scattering cross section in fourth-order perturbation theory. The vestiges of momentum conservation normal to the surface cause the occurence of a new phenomenon: sideband diffraction.
