Abstract

Neural networks are very useful tools for prediction and classification applications and they have been used for a wide variety of applications where statistical methods are employed. Some applications in environmental engineering area are; atmospheric corrosion modeling (Pintos et al., 2000), short-term predictions of hourly surface ozone concentrations and SO2 concentrations (Gardner and Dorling, 2000; Mok and Tam, 1998), identification of unknown air pollution sources (Reich et al., 1999), pH modeling (Moatar et al., 1999), optimal CO2 control in a greenhouse (Linker et al., 1998) and prediction of water resources variables (Maier and Dandy, 2000).
