Abstract

The unreinforced masonry is brittle and susceptible to sudden failure when subjected to lateral loads. The failures of unreinforced masonry in recent earthquakes have led to the development of new strengthening techniques. In this context, fiber reinforced composites are emerging as alternatives for strengthening of structural walls. Number of studies is available in the literature on the shear behavior of brick masonry. The focus of the present study is to determine shear strength of brick masonry by reinforcing with jute fiber reinforced composites. The experimental results indicated that shear strength and stiffness is enhanced by reinforcing with jute fiber composites. The Jute fiber composites are also effective to prevent sudden failure of unreinforced masonry.
