Abstract
Tunable lasers (TL) have been widely deployed in Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) systems. In the drive to achieve a high Information Spectral Density (ISD), on these WDM systems, carriers are also starting to investigate the use of advanced modulation formats [1]. Phase-shift-keyed (PSK) format, which carries information in optical phase, offers high receiver sensitivity, high tolerance to major nonlinear effects in high-speed transmission and high tolerance to coherent crosstalk [2]. SG-DBR lasers have already proven to be a good candidate for both static and dynamic networks with stable wavelength operation over 90 50-GHz spaced ITU channels, side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) ≫ 40dB, and output power ≫ 10mW [3]. However, in order to use SG-DBR lasers with advanced modulation formats it will be necessary to choose the operating point of the tunable laser such that the linewidth is narrow enough to support the phase modulated format being employed.
