Abstract

A face to face survey using an investigator designed interview schedule was conducted with a sample of 38 spousal caregivers of patients having a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The study objective was to examine changes in the couples' pattern of sexual behavior associated with the disease and its progression. Seventy-nine percent (79%) of participants reported a change in the sexual relationship with their AD spouse since the onset of disease symptoms. Sixty-one percent (61%) said their perception of the overall relationship to their spouse had altered as disability increased (e.g., wife to mother). This change in perception of the relationship resulted in caregivers reporting a sense of inappropriateness and even aversion in connection with activities of sexual intimacy with their spouse.
