Abstract

Valproic acid (VPA) is used as sodium valproate to treat partial and generalized seizures or acute psychoses and to prevent bipolar disorders and migraine. After acute VPA overdose, which in adults is usually a result of suicide attempts, clinical findings include coma, severe respiratory depression, hypotension, tachycardia, and death; laboratory findings include hyperosmolarity, hypernatremia, high anionic gap metabolic acidosis, hypocalcemia, elevation in serum aminotransferases, and hyperammoniemia.
