Abstract

Separation of zinc(II) from copper(II) from chloride solutions is studied using alkyl-8-hydroxyquinoline (KELEX 100). The separation can be achieved in the stage of extraction, scrubbing with water, or stripping with sulfuric acid. Appropriate conditions for such separation are given and discussed, with selective stripping being the most promising. In such a process, the extraction of both Zn(II) and Cu(II) can be carried out from solutions of high acidity and high concentration of chloride ions. An ammoniacal solution can be used for scrubbing chloride from the organic phase. Zinc(II) can then be selectively stripped from the organic phase with 0.25−0.8 M sulfuric acid at a 1:1 volume ratio. Nearly 3 M sulfuric acid is needed for the stripping of copper.
