Abstract

Gaspar Aselli visualised lymphatic vessels for the first time in 1627, in dogs’ intestines. In 1691, Anton Nuck developed a device allowing the injection of mercury into lymphatic vessels to better visualise them. Jean Pecquet also used dogs to discover the true lymphatic vessel termination in the thoracic duct, called receptaculum chyli. He showed that it did not end in the nipple but discharged the white fluid from the lymphatic vessel in the chyle into the venous system. In 1693, Guillaume De Houppeville first reported on radical mastectomy.
