Abstract
The increasing awareness of higher rotational speeds for certain applications has motivated research into ultra high speed drive systems. The switched reluctance machine (SRM), which is an important member of the high speed machine family, has attracted much attention in recent years. However, there are many challenges to control a SRM at high speed, especially without the help of a position sensor. This paper therefore focuses on speed-sensorless control of a SRM at high speeds. A novel rotor position estimation method is proposed that requires little computational effort. Validation results at high speed are presented with the aid of Ansoft/Maxwell simulation. Finally, a close-loop sensorless control is presented to achieve the full speed range sensorless control.
