Abstract

It is surprising that whereas Jacob of Voragine draws on many apocryphal traditions to write his legends, he hardly ever uses the term apocryphus in his Legenda aurea. After the instances of this term in this text has been listed, it is subjected to a synchronic and diachronic analysis in order to determine its meaning and bring out Jacob of Voragine's ambiguous attitude towards apocryphal literature.
