In this paper, I will first try to refute Lesher’s hypothesis who reads in 18.1 a polemical reference to divination: in the first verse, in fact, Xenophanes merely outlines an exemplum fictum, punctually overturned in 18.2. The fragment must be read, on the contrary, against the historical background that produced it. The language of Xenophanes in B18 is the same as ever and many are the interconnections with the remaining evidences. Here it is enough to recall the link with the two surviving elegies, in which the value of intellectuals is proudly claimed, as opposed to that of the athletes hailed by the masses. It will come as no surprise, therefore, that in B18 the researchers (ζητοῦντες) are celebrated, with a genuine ‘monument’ to what was being discovered at Miletus. I will also try to show how previous interpretations have been vitiated by an unfair devaluation of Xenophanes’ ‘scientific’ activity, seen as a pre-Herodotean ἱστορίη, not as an investigation referring to a methodology that was taking shape and in which Xenophanes largely recognised himself. B18, therefore, is not the first affirmation of coherent ‘philosophical’ interpretation, but the first, brilliant intuition of what enquiry was revealing, in opposition to the mythical tradition, in a passage from μῦθος to λόγος that was gradual, rich in nuances, but irreversible.

Aphrodite and Eros
  • May 13, 2013
  • Barbara Breitenberger

This book offers a groundbreaking revision of the popular image of Aphrodite and Eros that lives on in Roman poetry (Venus and Cupid) and has inspired artists for centuries. An interdisciplinary analysis of the Archaic period - using literary, iconographical, and cultic evidence - shows the distinct concept behind the two deities of love. Aphrodite's character, sphere of influence, and function feature in her traditional myths and are well reflected in cult. Eros, however, was not yet a similarly personified mythical figure at that stage, nor did he have an individual cult.Breitenberger follows the different stages of the development of Eros's personality. Originally a cosmic entity and an unpersonified aspect of Aphrodite, he was given his mythical identity by successive archaic lyric poets who were particularly keen to mythologize a male counterpart to the established love-goddess Aphrodite. This male love-god turns out to be the divinized homoerotic ideal of the male aristocracy 'worshipped' at their symposia. The development of the male love-god is taken as an example to demonstrate that poets' artistic innovation as well as their social and historical background played an important role in creating Greek mythology.

Egorova Svetlana Olegovna – lecturer. Volgograd Аcademy of MIA of Russian Federation. The article reveals the historical background of the eschatological final of the narrative «Viy» by N.V. Gogol. It is shown that personified historic decline of Cossacks in Homa Brutus is manifested in its infantilization leading the character and chthonic world of evil to total disaster. It is noted that at the level of the poetics the traditional myth and folk situation of the meeting of the young man and the witch is translated by Gogol from the genre of true stories and fairy tales into the genre of ballads, reflecting the lyrical feelings of the character due to his connection with the «other» world. Key words: Gogol, myth, story, eschatology, personified land, infantilization of a character, decline of Cossacks, fable, fairy tale, ballade .

The result of this study shows that since 1965, during the development order, the development of houses that is considered as the culture phenomenon is in progress. The analisys shows that there is a significant relationship on the family income factor in Tegalpanggung but there is not in Suratmajan. The multiple regression analisys displays that it has a positive relationship on all factors including social economy factor in both locations, but it becomes doubtful after each R Square analisys contributes more or less 20 percent only. It is because of the historical background of society in both locations. They were migrants and now live in their ancestral hams. One of their typical characteristics is that they still have an orientation to their origin places. Therefore the houses they live in now tend to he temporary houses for short-term settlement.TheAMD Program (one of Indonsian Government Program which concerns Indonesian Army/ABRI to make a community service in the village), could manipulate the condition by guiding the people to carry out the public necessity such as flood preventive. The flood always threatens the sojourn, dwelling house and their environment with destruction. This program is eflective to influence the people mattitude and behavior to make a forward movement in house renovation and environment maintenance. The rsult emphasizes a new atmosphere of cultural dimension, which is caused by a power distance, in this case, interest group, so that enables the people to have culture progress.
