Abstract

Abstract: The exact semiclassical wavefunction for a tunneling electron, coupled to the degrees of freedom of the host medium, is constructed. As a specific application, the result is used to calculate the tunneling amplitude for the electron interacting with a single vibrational mode of the medium. In agreement with previous numerical studies, the tunneling rate is enhanced due to the interaction—stimulated decrease of the tunneling barrier. Several tunneling regimes can be distinguished, depending on the relationship of vibrational frequency and tunneling time.
