Abstract
We propose a self-localization method for autonomous mobile robots using an Intelligent Data Carriers (IDCs) in this paper, which is a portable data management device and it can communicate with a robot in a very local area. Robots can read/write some data from/into the IDC placed in their work area using RF (Radio Frequency) communication. Generally, in the self-localization method based on positions of landmarks, it is necessary for robots to manage the maps of the landmarks. However it is difficult to keep the consistency among all the maps when they are updated frequently and dynamically. By putting the IDC in the work area and storing its own position data in itself, robots can acquire the position of the IDC without maps.
