In today’s competitive academic and economic landscape, working students face distinct challenges to their mental health. This study examines the relationship between self-confidence and psychological well-being (PWB) among 84 student assistants at a higher education institution in Negros Oriental, Philippines. Employing a descriptive-correlational design, the research utilized Kelsey Perkins’ model for self-confidence and Carol Ryff’s six-factor model for PWB. Results reveal that while respondents maintained high to very high levels of self-confidence, their PWB scores varied across different dimensions. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant relationship between self-confidence and overall PWB; however, the strength of this association was inconsistent. While some areas showed strong correlations, specific dimensions—including self-efficacy, autonomy, self-compassion, personal growth, and purpose in life—exhibited only weak correlations. These findings suggest that high self-confidence does not guarantee well-being in all aspects, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions to address these specific psychological gaps.

The article proposes a pedagogical model for the leadership competence formation of future officers – specialists in physical culture and sports (hereinafter – FOsSPCS) in the process of professional and pedagogical training in a higher military educational institution. The scientific approaches to the definition of the concepts of "model" and "pedagogical modeling" are studied. The pedagogical model of leadership competence formation of FOsSPCS in the process of professional and pedagogical training in higher education institutions is designed and the content of its blocks is described: the purpose and tasks, methodological approaches and principles, components and functions, methods and means of educational activities, criteria and levels of diagnosing its formation. All blocks of the pedagogical model are important and only in the system they ensure the optimal formation of leadership competence of IPES in the process of professional and pedagogical training in higher education institutions. This model consists of six interrelated blocks: target (reflects the goal and tasks of leadership competence formation of FOsSPCS in the process of professional and pedagogical training in higher education institutions, considering their professional knowledge, skills, abilities and capabilities in the chosen specialty, values and patriotism); methodological (explains the problem of leadership competence formation, taking into account the requirements of methodological approaches (axiological, competence, contextual, systemic, subject-activity) and principles of learning (accessibility of educational material, principle of individual approach, principle of contextual orientation, systematic and consistent, subject-subject interaction)); theoretical and functional (contains the content of their leadership competence as future specialists in physical culture and sports and important functions for its formation); subject-subject (involves bilateral cooperation between the teacher and the FOsSPCS and readiness to perceive each other as a subject of leadership and behavior); organizational and methodological (contains methods, techniques, technologies and means of leadership competence development of FOsSPCS in the process of professional and pedagogical training in higher education institutions); diagnostic and resultative (diagnoses the leadership competence of the FOsSPCS according to the criteria and indicators we have defined and determines the levels of its formation).

Aspirations and wellbeing in Romanian and US undergraduates
  • Apr 5, 2011
  • International Journal of Psychology
  • Michael J Stevens + 2 more

Updating cross-cultural research of the past decade on the relationship between life aspirations and wellbeing, we compared Romanian (N=69) and US (N=64) undergraduates on the contribution of the importance and likelihood of attaining intrinsic and extrinsic aspirations to psychological maladjustment and life satisfaction, and on the qualitative meaning they assign to financial success. Similarly to prior studies, we found that extrinsic and intrinsic aspirations tended to be either negatively or positively correlated with life satisfaction, respectively; however, wealth predicted life satisfaction for Romanian students. Unlike previous research, we found generally negative relationships between intrinsic aspirations and psychological maladjustment. Although there were no differences between Romanian and US undergraduates on extrinsic and intrinsic orientation, on the overall importance of attaining aspirations, or on specific extrinsic and intrinsic aspirations, Romanian students expressed weaker expectations of fulfilling intrinsic aspirations than did US students. Finally, the groups produced similar rankings of aspirations and assigned similar meaning to financial success. The results favored a social cognitive rather than a self-determination model of psychological wellbeing in that expectations for attaining aspirations were more often predictive of life satisfaction than were their content. We interpret these findings and their convergence and departure from earlier research in terms of political economic, demographic, and cultural factors. We encourage future cross-cultural investigations of the social construction of aspirations, subsidiation of seemingly contradictory aspirations to each other, and cognitive and ecological mediation of the complex relationship of aspirations to psychological functioning.

Decentralisation of the Compliance of Anti-tobacco Law in India: The Case of Higher Educational Institutions in New Delhi, India
  • Jul 1, 2023
  • Cureus
  • Raja Singh

IntroductionThis paper studies the decentralised compliance responsibility of India’s tobacco control legislation, called the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act of 2003, with its rules, which the government has outsourced to higher educational institutions, studied through an example of New Delhi. The study looks into the three most important parameters of decentralised compliance. Two of these require the installation of signboards by higher educational institutions, and the third involves imposing and collecting fines against persons found smoking within the educational institutions. Regarding the boards, the first board is about the warning prohibiting the sale within 100 yards of educational institutions, and the second one prohibits smoking in educational institutions. The study also checks with the educational institutions whether there is a presence of cigarette and tobacco product vendors within 100 yards of the institution, where the sale of such products has been banned by law. The study also found educational activities to create awareness in the institutions for tobacco control and cessation.MethodsThirty-six higher educational institutions, including universities, were randomly selected and studied through a unique methodology using India’s transparency law, i.e., the Right to Information Act 2005. The portions of the law, which was direct compliance, or related compliance by the higher educational institution was included in the study. This justified the decentralised responsibility of these higher educational institutions. Applications for information under the transparency law were requested and supplied. Out of the 47 institutions, in which information requests were filed, 36 provided the information under the law. Credible information was provided by the higher educational institutions and this information was collated and interpreted to provide insights into the compliance by the higher educational institutions.ResultsOnly 44.4% of the institutions had a board prohibiting the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products. This was a non-universal compliance by the higher educational institutions. 88.9 per cent had boards prohibiting smoking in the higher educational institutions. Only one out of the 36 had an instance of smoking recorded and collection of fines. While 47.2% reported to not have any instance of smoking and fine collection. Fifty per cent of the institutions had no record of fine collection amounting to defiance of the law. 75 per cent of institutions did some kind of awareness activities which was not a direct statutory requirement, but a recommended guideline.ConclusionThe results show that the intent to decentralise the compliance of the tobacco control law in New Delhi by the higher educational institutions has not been universally successful and requires much effort for its on-ground penetration. Such studies have a policy impact as they serve as an example for the generalisability of such statutes, which only work when there is implementation from the bottom-up and when the deterrent is also strong with incentivisation to the educational institutions to implement tobacco control with vigour.

  • Лейла Султанова

The important characteristic of the future teacher in the higher pedagogical educational institution is theoretical knowledge of multicultural education and practical skills necessary for the successful professional activity. Therefore, the efficiency of the cognition process when studying disciplines aimed at multicultural education of the future teacher in the higher educational institution is essential and depends entirely on the cognitive activity of the student. The achievement of this goal depends not only on the content of studies but also on the fact what methods and techniques of teaching are chosen for the organization of the process of multicultural education. We have analyzed most common classifications of teaching methods. We have found that the classification proposed by Yu. K. Babanskiy is appropriate in the choice of teaching methods for the discipline "Multicultural Education of the Future Teacher in the Higher Education Institution". Accordingly, we have selected and characterized the following three groups of methods: methods for the organization and conducting of the educational and cognitive activity; methods for the stimulation and motivation of the educational and cognitive activity; methods for control and self-control of the educational and cognitive activity. In addition, we have worked on the training in the development of critical thinking that involves the use of such methods and techniques as: the method of cluster analysis; the method of the use of questions which helps to develop critical thinking («Bloom's Camomile»); techniques for the analysis of information quality (separation of judgments, assumptions and assertions; use of technology of effective reading (INSERT), and the like.

Burnout, coping strategies, and psychological well-being among counsellors-in-training (CITS): A study in higher education institutions
  • Dec 10, 2024
  • Jurnal Pendidikan Bitara UPSI

Burnout, coping strategies, and psychological well-being are critical aspects of a counsellor-in-training's (CIT) professional development. In the demanding field of counselling, CITs often face various stressors, making it important to understand the factors that affect their mental health and resilience. This study aims (1) To describe demographics characteristics (age, gender, ethnicity) among CITs, (2) To identify level of burnout, coping strategies and psychological well-being among CITs, and (3) To determine the relationships between burnout, coping strategies and psychological well-being among CITs. This study used quantitative correlational research design. The purposive sampling method was employed to select respondents, based on specific criteria relevant to the study’s objectives. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires to 406 counsellors-in-training in six universities in Malaysia. The set of questionnaires were divided into four parts measuring demographic characteristics of the counsellors-in-training, burnout, coping strategies, and psychological well-being. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 27th version was used to analyse the data collected for descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics indicated 61.1% reported a high level of burnout, and 51% reported avoidant coping usage and 52% reported a low level of psychological well-being. Pearson Correlation analysis revealed a moderate negative relationship between burnout and psychological well-being (r = -.395, p <.01). More specifically, weak negative correlations were found between exhaustion (r = -.370, p <.01) and cynicism (r = -.152, p <.01) with well-being, while academic efficacy showed a weak positive correlation (r =.309, p <.01). Additionally, avoidant coping exhibited a weak negative relationship with well-being (r = -.254, p <.01). In contrast, weak positive correlations were observed for approach coping (r =.171, p <.01), humour (r =.210, p <.01), and religion (r =.257, p <.01). The study's findings highlight the prevalence of burnout and the use of coping strategies, such as avoidant coping, among counsellors-in-training. The negative relationship between burnout and psychological well-being underlines the need for educational institutions to address burnout proactively. Additionally, the positive influence of approach coping, humor, and religious practices suggests that fostering these strategies could enhance CITs' well-being. These results contribute to the importance of creating a supportive learning environment that promotes the personal and professional growth of CITs, helping them develop effective coping mechanisms to mitigate burnout.
