Abstract

Under weak UV irradiation (flux: 3.5 mmol hv/h) the activity of the hydrogenation catalyst IrCl(CO)(PPh 3) 2 is increased by factors of 2.5 and 10 compared with dark-reactions when 1,4- and 1.3-cyclohexadiene are hydrogenated in toluene at 50°C. Photochemical hydrogenation of 1,3-cyclohexadiene gave up to 98% selectively of only cyclohexene. From a mixture of 1,3- and 1,4-cyclohexadiene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene is photochemically hydrogenated in yields of up to 90%, without formation of cyclohexane.
