Abstract
Electrical operational and consumer equipment must be protected against stresses resulting from short-circuit circuits by the selective disconnection of the faulty systems. IEC 60364, Part 53 requires selectivity in low-voltage networks. This chapter describes the most important selectivity conditions for protective devices. In electrical systems, different overcurrent protective devices are used for overload and short-circuit protection. The effects of these faults can be significantly reduced when the protective devices are correctly chosen. Back-up protection is ensured when in the event of a short-circuit a downstream overcurrent protective device is protected by an upstream overcurrent protective device. This means that the rated breaking capacity of the downstream breaker can be smaller than the short-circuit current at the installation location. The selectivity limits and the backup protection can also be taken from the manufacturers’ information.
