Abstract

This special section contains selected papers from a research workshop held in February 2000 in Berlin. The aim of the workshop was to facilitate a dialog between the rock physics experts and those who apply their results to seismic monitoring problems. The workshop was organized by the Berlin and Karlsruhe groups of the Wave Inversion Technology (WIT) University Consortium and hosted by the Geophysics Department of the Freie Universitat Berlin. It was also sponsored by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and the German Geophysical Society (DGG). The workshop was attended by approximately 120 persons (40 from the industry and 80 from academia). They were from nine countries in Western Europe, as well as from United States, Russia, Poland, Armenia, Brazil, and Israel. The technical program included 40 technical papers, which were organized into three oral and two poster sessions.
