Abstract

Seismic moment determinations for 72 events in the Mediterranean and Middle East during 1963–70 from Rayleigh-wave spectral amplitudes are presented. Apparent stress values for these events are in general low, ranging from 0.005 to 6 bar; these agree with the results of a previous study that much of the deformation in this region is taking place anelastically. Source dimensions for 15 events have been estimated from either surface faulting evidence or the size of relocated aftershock zones, and stress drop and total elastic energy release estimated and compared with apparent stress and the energy released in seismic radiation.
