Abstract

The definition of subjects through the sequencing of cylinder seal rollings is a funda-mental step for the interpretation of a iconographic evidence. The perception of the images is largely determined by the arrangement of their symbols. In many cases, this is done intuitively, in that the unroller cuts the rolling in such a way as he perceives the motif arrangement at first glance. With cata- and anaphoric elements as well as the arrangement of the symbols aligned with the centre, this article describes essential compositional features that need to be perceived and considered when sequencing.
