Abstract
Techniques for approximating digital curves by polygonal lines are a valuable tool for image analysis and data compression. Here, a syntactical pattern recognition scheme for segmenting a digital curve into connected straight lines is described. The scheme involves only integer operations and can be performed in a single pass. The resulting polygonal line coincides with the digital curve within one pixel unit.
