Abstract This section presents a list of some currently valid species- and genus-group names and their derivations applied to Culicidae. The sources of these names fall into the following broad categories: acronyms and institutions; cultures and peoples; habitats and plants; morphological traits; environment and collection sites; perceptions and behavioural attributes; animals; perceived relationships; distinction and uniqueness; and, whimsical, unconventional and ludicrous names.
