Abstract
Elevated proteolysis is observed during bacterial vaginosis and has been linked to HIV acquisition and preterm labour. Proteolytic remodelling of structural components (collagens/elastin) within cervical/uterine tissues can impair cervical barrier function and promote pathogen invasion. During pregnancy, aberrant proteolysis can trigger premature cervical dilation and chorioamniotic membrane rupture. We sought to define the enzyme classes contributing to Prevotella species’ secreted proteolytic activities targeting structural components of cervical/uterine tissues.
