Abstract

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease with increased number of cases in Brazil. Case 1 involved a 19-year-old woman referred for painless ulcer evaluation in the lower lip. It was also observed erythematous papules on the palms. Case 2 involved a female patient referred for evaluation of nodules and painless fissures in the back of the tongue with no other visible lesions. In both cases, Venereal Disease Research Laboratory and anti-HIV tests were requested, and incisional biopsy was performed, whose histopathologic diagnosis in both cases was suggestive of syphilis. Subsequently an antitreponema immunohistochemical reaction was performed, with a positive result for both cases. In case 1, Venereal Disease Research Laboratory was reagent and anti-HIV negative; in case 2, the patient did not return with the requested tests. Considering the increase in the number of cases of syphilis in the country, the knowledge of syphilis oral manifestations in all its stages is of fundamental importance.
