Abstract

Electrical breakdown and spark breakdown being defined, the advantages of studying breakdowns using asymmetrical gaps are indicated. Then denoting the principal mechanisms active in breakdown, a number of exemplary breakdown processes are described in detail as revealed by modern techniques. The examples indicate the very sensitive nature of the breakdown process in regard to state of electrodes, gaseous purity, etc., as well as emphasizing the great care needed in designating the breakdown mechanism in any given case.
