Abstract

Construction of the £330 million second motorway bridge across the Severn Estuary between England and Wales is part of a package of over £1 billion which includes new motorway approach roads and the financing, operation and maintenance of both crossings. This paper describes the background to the second crossing-from the initial feasibility study started in 1984 and subsequent geotechnical, hydraulic and aerodynamic investigations to the preparation of tender documentation, appointment of the concessionaire in 1990 and start of the 30 year concession following parliamentary and planning approval in 1992.
