Abstract

It is a common practice in global philosophy to bifurcate philosophy into the categories of Eastern philosophy and Western philosophy. Typically, it is taken for granted that while the thesis of classical theism has a rich connection with Western philosophy, there is little to no connection between the thesis of classical theism and Eastern philosophy. In fact, Eastern philosophy is usually taken to be atheistic and antithetical to classical theism. In this paper, we consider to what extent various philosophies from the East are compatible with classical theism and whether they can rightfully be seen as attempts of coming to understand the Divine. We conclude that, rightly defined, Classical Theism is compatible with Eastern religious traditions. Specifically, we engage Buddhist, Confucian, Daoist, and Advaita Vedānta traditions.
